DISINFECTION OF DENTURE GUARDS: LONG-TERM TIPS
Share
Regular deep cleaning
Occasionally, at least once a month, if you play or participate in activities regularly, it is important to give your mouth guard a deeper clean . This is not always necessary after every use, but rather at intervals when accumulated bacteria and other impurities can be more thoroughly removed.
To do this, soak your mouthguard in a basic antibacterial solution of soap and water – a mild hand or dish soap works well here. After soaking for about 10 minutes, scrub all areas of the protector with a soft brush or cloth, then rinse completely and allow to air dry.
If that doesn't help, you might consider a similar process, but with vinegar and hydrogen peroxide as the main cleaning agents. In addition, you can also use a denture cleaner to deep clean your mouth guard.
Mouth guard case
When it comes to proper mouth guard storage, you should avoid simply throwing it in your bag or on the counter. The same bacteria that can be introduced when using a mouth guard can also come into contact with other surfaces and potentially contaminate them as well.
Instead, invest in a proper mouth guard case – these are usually affordable and can often be found at sporting goods stores or online. It protects your protector from external dirt and offers a convenient and safe place to store it when not in use.
Exchange frequency
Finally, while here at KAT Protection we specialize in long-lasting custom mouthguards, there comes a time when a replacement is necessary for safety or hygiene reasons. In general, you should replace your mouth guard once a season or every six months, but any time you notice significant wear or damage to your mouth guard, you should replace it immediately.
